Deepening Understanding in Mathematics

Meaningful learning is underpinned by the development of understanding. Being able to articulate the elements of a design for a learning environment that fosters understanding in a discipline such as mathematics is a challenge for both researchers and teachers. An Australian Research Council project in Victoria , focusing on Years 9-11 mathematics classrooms, is exploring the use of real world contexts and technology to develop students' understanding of functions. Researchers and one teacher from this project will present their understanding of how to design learning experiences to deepen students' understanding of mathematics. This presentation will discuss conditions for success and the design of such learning environments where the development of understanding is of paramount importance.
