Consequences of errors in measurements

Two GSP files created by Alan Benneto of Westbourne
Grammar School can be downloaded here, to accompany practical work in
trigonometry. The files help students understand the consequences that
errors in measuring distances or angles have on the calculated distances.
Both the files show a situation where a height is to be calculated by
measuring the distance to the base of the tree/spire etc and the angle of
elevation. The first file (download here) enables students to make small
changes to the measured angle and to observe the changes in the calculated
height. The second file (download here) enables students to make small
changes to the measured distance and to observe the changes in the
calculated height. When students measure both the angle and the distance,
they can get errors from both sources, which may compound or cancel out.
These files are useful for putting into context the different results for
the height that different members of the class have found.

Applets for Trigonometry

There is a wonderful collection of applets for teaching trigonometry
available for use over the web, or for purchase from the Japanese "Manipula
Math Applet Collection" by IES.

Some of our favourites are The Crane (occasionally spelt Clane), KANRAN.shtml,
sin t = a, the sine box and the cosine box.

Land Division Project

Practical project for locating a new fence on a farm property.
